Part 5: Praying in Real Life
Chapter 29: Listening to God
A number of years ago I took a retreat day in December to pray through my goals for the coming year. During longer times of prayer such as this, I meditate and pray through passages of Scripture. Sometimes I am simply still before God, slowing down so I can become more aware of the direction of my life and my heart. I’ll ask, How is God speaking into my life? What is God doing?
As I thought about the coming year, I wrote in my prayer journal, What do you want me to focus on? How do you want me to focus? The thought came to me as clear as the words on this page: I don’t want you to have any goals this year. I’m going to work on your character. Surprised, I asked, What character issues? Again, a clear thought came to me, You know. And I did. Almost immediately seven items came to mind, and I wrote each of them down in my prayer journal.
Was God speaking to me during that day of prayer, or was I just recording my own thoughts in my prayer journal? … I believe God was hands-on, working on me, speaking to me during that day of prayer. Here’s why.
First, my question and the subsequent answer were immersed in reflections on God’s Word. It was just one stage in the unfolding, biblically informed story of repentance. Psalm 25:14 says, “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.” It was the opposite of human intuition gone amok. In fact, my intuition was being mastered by God.
Second, the answer surprised me. I’m almost obsessive about goals, yet I’d never had a thought like that one before. In the Bible, we see the same surprising quality to God’s intervention. Who would have guessed the incarnation, the cross, and the resurrection? The thought that I was too proud sounded like God. It was distinctively his voice. It matched Scripture. He write his Word on our hearts.
Finally, it came true. God did nothing but work on my character that year. There was no point in having goals. The kingdom came. God’s will was done. Scripture tells us we can discern a false prophet if his prophecy does not come true (see Deuteronomy 18:21-22).
WEEKLY PRAYER PROMPTS:
Each week we will provide 3 -5 different prompts to aid you in praying for the people and ministries of Woodlands Church as well as the people within our community. This week, pray for the following five prompts:
Easter: Easter is in three weeks; many people come from the community to attend our Easter services who do not normally attend here. Over these next three weeks being praying for God to be drawing many people to our services, and preparing their hearts to hear the gospel. Pray for all the planning and preparation going on for those services, both on Good Friday and Easter.
Worship Summit: Over 220 people from around the state came to Woodlands this past weekend for a worship summit. Pray that as they go back to their respective churches that God would give much grace to implement the skills, teachings and learnings that they received. Pray that the fruit of the summit would be deepen genuine Biblical worship in the churches that participated.
Building Plans: Ask God to continue to guide us clearly in all aspects of the design of this building so that the final product is an excellent facility maximized for ministry. Pray for guidance in choosing a company to work with that will provide the construction loan, and that God will continue to provide financially for this project through the faithful giving of His people. We are also planning how to incorporate the design elements of the current building with the new one. Pray for wisdom.
Ministry wrap-up’s. As we begin the month of April, many ministries in our church are heading into their final 6-8 weeks before summer break. Pray for perseverance for those leading the ministries, and the ability to finish well and strong.
Strategic Planning: We are about 15 months away from occupying our new worship center! We anticipate this will be a phenomenal opportunity to reach ought to, welcome and assimilate new people into our church. Lots of discussions are going on about how to prepare for that grand opening and be ready for the influx of new people we anticipate. Pray for God’s wisdom and guidance as we evaluate current ministries and strategies and plan for new ones.
SCRIPTURE TO PRAY:
Each week we encourage you to use one new Biblical prayer as a guideline to pray for family, friends, small group members, our missionaries, pastors and staff.
The verse for this week is 2 Corinthians 4:7-10 in the CSB translation.
Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair; we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed. We always carry the death of Jesus in our body, so that the life of Jesus may also be displayed in our body.
MISSIONARY TO SUPPORT:
Each day, we’ll highlight a missionary/country/region/movement for whom to be praying. Remember, several of our missionaries are serving in sensitive areas so we will not always be able to share full names, locations, or their ministry. If you are interested in learning more specifics, please contact Whitney Swenson.
We are going to continue praying for all of our missionaries via the countries they serve in (please realize, we will not be able to identify many of the missionaries by name as we work through this list).
Today we will pray for the many missionaries we have that are impacting the Kingdom by bringing the gospel into the Muslim communities in their respective areas of influence. These missionaries are working and battling to share the truth about Jesus Christ - and often it is a battle! Would you lift up our missionaries (cannot be named here, but see above if you’d like more information!) today? Pray that the light they bring would drive out the darkness, that the truth about Jesus would resonate and remain in hearts of new believers! And that it would spread! Pray the gospel would spread like wildfire in these communities.
