Reading:

Genesis 31-33, Psalm 7, Matthew 16-17

Prayer:

  • At the end of Matthew 16, it’s clear that Peter and the disciples don’t quite understand yet what Jesus is all about – none of us would have if we were in their shoes! Jesus himself says that following God’s will is costly; it’s so costly, that Jesus will soon give up his life for it. Peter refuses to believe it and says so in 16:22. Yet Jesus goes on to say that the easy way isn’t the way of the cross. The way of the cross is hard, and it will cost your life; anyone who wants to follow Jesus will have to give up their life to truly find it. Pray today that you would consider everything as nothing (as the Apostle Paul said in Philippians) for the sake of following Jesus; that your heart would be pushed in this direction.
  • In light of Martin Luther King Jr day today, let’s pray together this prayer from a book titled “Thou, Dear God”: Prayers That Open Hearts and Spirits, written by The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • O God, make us willing to do your will, come what may. Increase the number of persons of good will and moral sensitivity. Give us renewed confidence in nonviolence and the way of love as taught by Christ. Amen.
  • Pray for Tammy as she seeks to make Christ known overseas. *
